Where to Ski in March in Europe

Spring skiing in Europe is the sweet spot when the snow's still decent, lift queues have shrunk and there's a chance of sunshine.

March is when you can ski all day in a light jacket and still find perfect, powdery snow if you know where to look.

After beating the January blues and February slush, we all deserve a mountain escape with some snow sports adrenalin thrown in.

I've rounded up some of the best late-season skiing in Europe. Here are some top places to catch great snow and enjoy a winter wonderland - hopefully with a spot of sun.

Where to Ski in March in Europe

Austria

Obergurgl

  • Nearest airport: Innsbruck Airport, then 1 hour 30 mins by car.
  • Ski season: Late November to late April.
  • Ideal for: Families, beginner to intermediate skiers and snow reliability.

Known as The Diamond of the Alps, Obergurgl is Austria's most snow-sure resort.

As Europe turns slushy, this high-altitude gem keeps its powder pristine well into spring.

The resort has a no-frills approach to skiing. If you're looking for mountains over Instagram stories from champagne bars, here you'll meet your match.

With wide, gentle slopes for beginners and families, it's perfect for bringing kids without needing family therapy afterwards.

Ischgl

  • Nearest airport: Innsbruck Airport, then 1 hour 15 mins by car.
  • Ski season: Early December to April.
  • Ideal for: Intermediate to advanced skiers, Luxury seekers and après-ski.

If Obergurgl is Austria's sensible sibling, Ischgl is the one who discovered tequila at uni. The resort is known for serious skiing and serious parties.

The Silvretta Arena connects Ischgl with Swiss Samnaun, giving you 239km of mostly intermediate runs.

By March, the sun hits the slopes perfectly, but high altitude means no mush.

For après-ski, Ischgl's event scene is impressive. Its end-of-season concerts have previously featured the likes of Shaggy and OneRepublic.

France

Paradiski

  • Nearest airport: Geneva Airport, then 2 hours 30 mins by car.
  • Ski season: Mid-December to mid-April.
  • Ideal for: Mixed-ability groups, snowboarders and long-distance skiing.

Paradiski connects Les Arcs and La Plagne with a double-decker cable car.

With 425km of pistes, you could ski for days without repeating runs.

By March, snow cannons have done their job and north-facing slopes hold plenty of powder.

Perfect for mixed groups - experts can tackle Aiguille Rouge while beginners build confidence at La Plagne.

Tignes

  • Nearest airport: Geneva Airport, then 3 hours by car.
  • Ski season: December to April.
  • Ideal for: Intermediate skiers, high-altitude and off-piste skiing and late-season trips.

What Tignes may lack in wooden chalets and alpine prettiness, it makes up for in snow reliability.

Sharing Espace Killy with Val d'Isère gives you 300km of pistes up to 3,456m. March means spring conditions with snow likely to still be there by the time you leave.

For intermediates, Tignes offers wide pistes for carving without fear. Off-piste fans can tackle the Fingers area or Vallée Perdue and grab a guide to come along for the ride.

Switzerland

Mürren

  • Nearest airport: Zurich Airport, then 2 hours 30 mins by car.
  • Ski season: December to April.
  • Ideal for: Intermediate and advanced skiers, scenic skiing and traditional alpine charm.

Mürren is picture-perfect, like a ski resort in a snow globe. This car-free village sits on a cliff edge with Instagram-worthy views.

Though not exceptionally large, with 53km of pistes, Mürren excels in quality and scenery.

By March, you can ski from the 2,970m Schilthorn summit to the village.

North-facing slopes at altitude mean proper snow in excellent condition. March visitors can also enjoy some sunshine at the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, famous for featuring in a James Bond film.

Verbier

  • Nearest airport: Geneva Airport, then 2 hours by car.
  • Ski season: November to late April.
  • Ideal for: Freeride and expert skiers, beginners and intermediates, luxury travellers and après-ski lovers.

Think of Verbier as the Waitrose of skiing - great quality but priced accordingly. Part of the 4 Vallées with 410km of pistes, it's famous for challenging off-piste terrain.

March conditions are typically superb. The high altitude preserves the snow while Swiss grooming keeps pistes immaculate as spring approaches.

Iceland

Hlíðarfjall Ski Resort

  • Nearest airport: Akureyri Airport, then a ten-minute drive.
  • Ski season: Early December to late April.
  • Ideal for: Beginner to intermediate skiing, snowboarding and catching the Northern Lights.

Skiing in Iceland is unusually brilliant. Hlíðarfjall offers the unique combo of daytime skiing and nighttime Northern Lights.

The resort is modest with 25km of pistes, but exotic. By March, increased daylight gives more slope time while maintaining snow quality.

Tindastóll, Sauðárkrókur, North Iceland

  • Nearest airport: Akureyri Airport, then 1 hour 30 mins by car.
  • Ski season: Mid-December to mid-April.
  • Ideal for: Intermediate to advanced skiers, remote skiing, cross-country trails and peaceful slopes.

If crowd-free skiing is your ideal, Tindastóll may be your paradise. This tiny resort offers just 5km of pistes but boasts ocean views and few queues.

By March, Iceland's harsh winter softens while preserving its snow. You'll share slopes with locals, not international crowds.

Italy

Tonale Pass

  • Nearest airport: Verona Airport, then 2 hours 30 mins by car.
  • Ski season: Late October to mid-April.
  • Ideal for: Beginner and intermediate skiers, snowboarders, high-altitude skiing.

Tonale Pass offers reliable spring snow thanks to its high altitude and the Presena Glacier.

March brings sunshine with excellent conditions, especially on north-facing slopes.

The wide, groomed pistes suit intermediate skiers practising carving without technical challenges.

Connecting to Ponte di Legno and Temù gives you 100km of varied terrain.

Plus, this is Italy. Mountain restaurants serve proper food at reasonable prices and coffee tastes how coffee should.

Sestrière

  • Nearest airport: Turin Airport, then 1 hour 30 mins by car.
  • Ski season: December to April.
  • Ideal for: Beginner to intermediate skiing, large ski areas and families.

Sestrière, one of the first purpose-built resorts, was created by Fiat's founder in the 1930s.

Despite lacking traditional charm, it offers excellent skiing and reliable snow.

High altitude and north-facing slopes maintain good conditions into spring.

Having hosted the 2006 Olympics, you can test yourself on genuine Olympic runs.

March sunshine means terrace lunches with Italian wine. Plus, being close to Turin makes it ideal for a long weekend break.
